WBC: Conor McGregor could fight for boxing world title with one win

Conor McGregor could be just ‘one win’ away from possible boxing world title shot with Manny Pacquiao rumoured to be next after UFC return vs Dustin Poirier.

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) two-division champion Conor McGregor is just 0-1 as a professional boxer, having been shut down by pound-for-pound great Floyd Mayweather in their crossover fight back in summer 2017.

But “Notorious” is still just one victory away from a title shot.

“I would say, he needs to face and defeat a ranked fighter, then he would be eligible to be ranked and to compete for a title,” Sulaiman told SunSport.

Sulaiman went on to give examples of fighters from other disciplines who eventually captured WBC gold.

“We have plenty of examples of Muay Thai fighters, who turned professional in international boxing, and they are eligible to fight for the title,” he said.

“We also have amateur superstars like Vasiliy Lomachenko, they come into professional boxing and fight for the title and it’s proven it works.”

McGregor is best known for his MMA career, winning UFC titles at two different weights. His only professional foray into boxing was a loss to Floyd Mayweather.
