Video: Tony Ferguson finishes Salt Papi to end nightmare losing streak

At Misfits Boxing 22 in Manchester, England, former interim lightweight champion and future UFC Hall of Famer Tony Ferguson earned his first combat sports win since 2019. He secured a come-from-behind TKO victory over Nathaniel “Salt Papi” Bustamante in the third round, a major upset for bettors.

While Ferguson had his moments in the first two rounds, Papi landed crisper blows, winning both rounds. In the third round, Ferguson began applying constant pressure. He backed Papi against the ropes and unleashed a barrage of shots, prompting the referee to stop the fight instead of issuing a standing eight-count.

With the victory, the 41-year-old Ferguson captured the Misfits Boxing interim middleweight championship.

Tony Ferguson (25-11 MMA, 1-0 boxing) had struggled in recent years. Once a dominant lightweight, he gained fame with a record-breaking 12-fight win streak in the UFC from 2013 to 2019. This streak included a 2017 TKO victory over Kevin Lee to win the interim lightweight title while Conor McGregor pursued a boxing match against Floyd Mayweather. However, Ferguson’s impressive run ended with a loss to Justin Gaethje in 2020. That defeat marked the beginning of an eight-fight losing streak that led to his eventual departure from the UFC.
