Gilbert Burns is now COVID-19 negative, clearing the way for a shot at UFC welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.
In his official Twitter account, the Brazilian revealed that the last test performed by him no longer showed the presence of COVID-19 in his body.
scheduled to face Kamaru Usman at UFC 251, held on July 11, at Ilha da Luta, the black belt saw the dream of competing for the welterweight belt being interrupted after testing positive for COVID-19.
UFC officials swiftly shifted to Jorge Masvidal to take Burns’s place. Masvidal fought Usman on six days notice, but failed to wrest the belt from the champion.
It is unclear how soon the UFC will want to host the Usman vs. Burns bout, but they’ll likely try to do it before the end of 2020.
“No corona!”, Celebrated Gilbert ‘Durinho’ on Twitter.
With six victories in a row, four since he moved up to the welterweight division, Durinho positioned himself as the first place in the category ranking. Although the UFC has not yet made it official, the Brazilian should maintain his position as the next challenger to the belt and finally face former training partner Kamaru Usman in the near future.
