Dana White defends McGregor and pokes Gaethje: “We offer fights he didn’t accept”

Coming from three straight knockout wins and currently in third place in the UFC lightweight ranking, Justin Gaethje anticipated being the next title-challenger against the winner of the Khabib NurmagomedovTony Ferguson contest in april 18th. But everything changed when Dana White said that if Conor McGregor beats Donald Cerrone on January 18, he will fight for the lightweight title, a fact that angered the American fighter.

Away from the octagons since October 2018, when he was finalized by Khabib Nurmagomedov, McGregor returns at UFC 246 against ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, in a fight for the middleweight division. Despite all these factors, Dana White, in an interview with ESPN, defended the former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion, and took the opportunity to ‘poke’ ‘the dissatisfied Gaethje.

“Look what Conor has done in the last few years, how old. And then he loses to Khabib in a fight that was, when you talk about rivalry, it’s like another level of enmity. And Gaethje was rising. We offer many fights that Gaethje did not accept either. So Conor is next in line for this fight (for the belt) if he beats Cowboy, ”said Dana White, before commenting on the fact that the fight between McGregor and Cerrone was scheduled for the middleweight division.

“It’s a fight up to lightweight that they won’t cut the weight. And realistically when Conor said, ‘I want this fight up to 170 lb .’ And then gave me the reasons why he wanted to do that, and I thought, ‘There’s no way Cowboy can argue about that.’ Why cut the weight if both agreed that they don’t want to cut the weight? ”

If he emerges victorious from his commitment to Cerrone – which comes from two straight losses – Conor McGregor will wait for the winner between champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and challenger Tony FergusonJustin Gaethje, by all accounts, will have to do at least one more fight before getting his title shot, especially if he doesn’t want to be months away from the octagons.
